TRACING THE RICH HISTORY OF CHIPATA Published On March 5, 2017 By Davies M.M Chanda FeaturesBy JULIUS PHIRI –
CHIPATA, formerly Fort Jameson, traces its origin from around 1899 when it was created by Robert Codrington, then a deputy administrator. Previously, the administration of North Eastern Rhodesia were conducted in Blantyre in then Nyasaland presently Malawi. Following the administration takeover of the North Eastern Rhodesia by the British South African Company (BSA) under leader Cecil Rhodes, building operations commenced in Mpezeni’s village, the same year. By 1902, the town had six tin roofed houses, a set of offices and one government house and the golf course was also established in the same year. Some of the major buildings include the current Anglican Church that was commissioned in 1905. In 1911, Fort Jameson lost its status as a capital to Kalomo, after the amalgamation of the North Eastern and North Western into the new Northern Rhodesia. There was a peculiar atmosphere about Ft. Jameson. The 'Boma' was pleasantly situated among a group of hills running up to 5,000 ft and in springtime it had a beauty of its own. But it was unhealthy, not only physically but mentally. Malaria was prevalent, and there was the dreaded sleeping sickness in the nearby Luangwa valley. Many other tropical diseases were common. Not only that, but the heat and the isolation engendered a strange, inexplicable mental condition. Out of the tiny community, totalling a little over two hundred whites in the entire Province, we averaged roughly a funeral a month and a suicide a year. Hulle tweede dogter, Gertruida is in 1922 in Broken Hill, Noord Rhodesië gebore.
I would like to describe Broken Hill from the early 1920s and its growth and development thereafter. Iit was a small mining camp, which owed its existence to the lead mine “The Broken Hill Development Co.” The village was divided into three distinct areas. There was the mine and admin office and housing area. Then there was the railway camp i.e. the Railway Station and workshop and its residential area. Finally there was the Business area and what little housing there was. To start off with, there was no electricity supply, nor laid-on water or sewage. Water was drawn from the village pump. Your house staff normally employed a young boy whose main job it was to carry water. There were no toilets as we know them. They were was simply built over a hole in the ground and later a bucket. Hot bath water was heated in 40-gallon drums. Your water boy also served to collect your firewood from the bundu. (https://zjc.org.il/early-days-of-broken-hill/)
The mine and railway towns were each responsible for their own services. At that stage, the total white population was not much more than about 200. The roads if they existed were gravel roads. The rail heading to the north ended in Kapiri n Pashi about 60 miles further north. From there on, the transport was by Nature Carrier and the official load was 60 pounds per head. Later on, heavy transport was undertaken by motor lorries to out-lying districts and via the Great North Road through Tonga and north to Kenya. At the height of Broken Hill’s development, the population might have been 2000 whites. (https://zjc.org.il/early-days-of-broken-hill/)
