Stephanus Christiaan was die seun van Johannes Petrus Nel en Johanna Petronella Lotter.

His sons all served with the Piet Retief commando. Philip Jacobus Nel and Jacob Louis Poklenberg Nel surrendered together with him. Stephanus Christiaan Nel and Willem Martinus Johannes Nel surrendered 1 March 1901. The family lived together at Volksrust until his sons joined the National Scouts. (Anita Campbell)
