FAMILYSEARCH
When Martha Louisa married Barend she had six stepchildren ranging in ages from 3 ½ to 13
War record, based on the names and ages of the children, leads me to the assumption that these were children of Martha Louisa and Barend Roos:

ROOS Family, Piet Retief
Miss Johanna Catharina Roos, age 4 died Volksrust, measles Unique ID: 17606
Master Stefanus Roos age 1y 9m died Volksrust, measles Unique ID: 17607 p.343

In his compensation claim J P Nell says he surrendered with his brother Stephanus (who lived on Edinburg, the same farm as his daughter Martha Louisa Roos) and all these family members are merely registered as NEL family. We can assume that the Roos and Nell families would have surrendered on the same day and been forwarded to Volksrust together.

Rather puzzlingly, on a different death list (but note sequential ID) is the following entry:
Miss Martha L Roos age 6 died Volksrust measles Unique ID: 17608 18/9/1901, p.1389
Martha Louisa Lotter Roos, same age, however survived the war- was she one of a twin and wrong name entered?

In his compensation claim 1903 it is noted that at the conclusion of peace he had lost all his stock, with the exception of one horse, owned 750 morgen of land and was in £400 debt. He submitted a claim for £1886 to the repatriation fund. (Indistinct), but officer makes a recommendation that a grant £200-£400 be made to the claimant. Included is also the claim by Barend Roos jnr.: £20 for a horse lost in the war and £10 for a horse bought by the ZAR.  He is recompensed the £10 which was never collected but is still with the papers.  (Anita Campbell)

After Barend died in 1926, Martha Louisa went to live in Greytown.  Her first daughter had already moved to Natal and married there in 1923. As we can see from the death notice, Martha Louisa and Barend had five children:
