FUNERAL OF THE LATE DOWAGER LADY MONTAGU OF BEAULIEU

The funeral of the late Dowager Lady Montagu of Beaulieu, who died at her residence, 3, Tilney-street, Mayfair, on May 2nd, took lace at Beaulieu Abbey Church on Thursday afternoon. The remains, enclosed in a shell, were brought to Beaulieu on Wednesday evening, and were then enclosed in an elm coffin made by Mr. E.R. Payne from wood grown on the Beaulieu Estate. It was simply adorned with a large iron cross and iron furniture made by the village blacksmith, and was in every respect similar to the coffin in which the late Baron Montagu's remains were laid to rest. It was afterwards placed in the church, where it remained during the night . . . The grave, a plain earth one, lined with moss and studded with white roses and lilies of the valley (the work Mr. B. Kent, head gardener), is situated in the ancient sacristy of the Old Abbey Church, and adjoins that of the deceased Dowager's husband, the first Baron Montagu. The scene at the graveside was most impressive. The sun shone gloriously, and the lad song of the birds seemed to be one of inspiration and hope . . . while the ivy-clad arches brought vividly to the mind the history of the past centuries, and seemed to stand as sentinels over the graves of those who loved and had done so much to restore the beautiful and historic Abbey ruins. [There is much more to this article, describing the service, hymns, and attendees.] (Western Gazette, 14 May 1915, p10) (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/209386206/cecily-susan-douglas-scott-montagu)
