Prisoners of War
As the number of prisoners grew the decision was taken to hold the prisoners away from South Africa. Why overseas? There was nowhere that was suitable in South Africa. There was the problems of transport, the possibility that prisoners might be freed by their comrades and the burden of feeding the men. When St Helena filled up, Ceylon was chosen as a destination. The first batch of prisoners arrived in Ceylon on 9 August 1900. A large camp was set up at the hill station at Diyatalawa. They are housed in large huts constructed of wood, and having roofs of galvanized iron to keep out the rains and the rays of the tropical sun. The roofs are covered with cocoa nut leaves, so that the iron doesn't get heated during the middle of the day. In each hut we saw beds for about forty prisoners. They were ranged along the wall on either side, and over each was a shelf on which the prisoner kept his books and other small belongings. Under the bed was his clothes-chest and the tin plate and knife and fork with which he ate at table. Some of them had their tables in the huts where they slept, but more had spread their meal under some shady tree in the open air. The ending of the war brought its own problems. The return of men from the commandos and the prisoner-of-war camps, combined with the return of the families from the coast camps meant a huge influx of people. Most camps lacked enough accommodation for their tents were, by this stage, old and worn. By July most had returned from East London and, as each family was sent away with a tent, tent accommodation began to run out once more. As in so many cases, food was a problem to the last. Meat for the repatriating families was often not available and what there was, was regularly condemned. Vegetables were in short supply and scurvy was a constant worry. At the end of December there were still 200 people left in the camp, including two in hospital, possibly suffering from typhoid fever.
