k.8.   William, ged. 23/01/1825, Oldbury, Staffordshire, Engeland, oorl.

Queen Victoria is associated with Britain's great age of industrial expansion, economic progress and, especially, empire.  At her death, it was said, Britain had a worldwide empire on which the sun never set. (http://www.royal.gov.uk/historyofthemonarchy/ kingsandqueensoftheunitedkingdom/thehanoverians/victoria.aspx)

This most interesting English surname, is recorded in the spellings of Best, Beste, Bester, and Bestar. It is usually job descriptive and derives from the pre 7th century 'beste' - meaning a 'beast', and hence refers to a cow-herd or cattle dealer. Sometimes, in the robust fashion of the Middle Ages, it was a nickname for a 'brutal person', and as such probably applied to Wilkin le Best, in the 1260 Assize Rolls of Cheshire. Whatever its original meaning, the surname holders have been prominent in British History.  (http://92.51.246.136/clan_info.asp?clanID=1870)

Sy  beroep word as Rowler of Iron aangegee.  Iron Rolling.  Long snake like red hot coils of iron, whipping across the iron plated floor at speed, as they came out of the roller. Nimble men, grabbing them with tongs, avoiding other hot coils, and putting them back into the rollers to further reduce the size. The men worked in teams, for it was hot, hard, and dangerous work. Facinating though, to watch a lump of iron 4 feet long and 6 inches square, reduced to an angle iron, 22 feet long, and an eighth of an inch thick, in just a few minutes. They also rolled iron plates, which were a vital part of building a Boiler, and for the construction of all the ships that came later. Brunel made use of such plates, in the Bridge over the Tamar, in Devon, and the building of the Great Eastern Steamship.  (http://www.blackcountrymuse.com/ironworking.htm)

Anne Best is op 12/08/1832 in Mexborough gedoop.  Mexborough, where the mellow sandstone of the houses and field walls became blackened and the expanding population was increasingly housed in monotonous rows of brick terraces.  (Worsbrough:  Change and Continuity in the Society, Economy and Buildings of a South Yorkshire township 1600-1851 by Denis Ashurst Thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Sheffield 1995.)  Haar ma is gelys as Hannah Best. Hannah Best, d.v. Lori Herman:  I find it unlikely (but not impossible) that the father of Ann was a William Best.  I think that the minister asked her the name of her father and she said ‘William’ (since William Dawson was the only father she had) and so it ended up on the registration as William Best – assuming that the minister did not know that she was illegitimate.

(H.O. 107/2318)

1932. Coghlan's Forge, between Thwaite Gate and the river, occupied a site that had a long history as Hunslet Forge.  (http://www.hunslet.org/Pepper_Lane_area_(1).html#Peppers 1932 map)

Swinton is a suburban town within the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, in South Yorkshire.  (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swinton,_South_YorkshirePartly in parish of Mexborough, and partly in Wath-upon-Dearne, in 1857 the population was 1252.  Described in the late 1800's:  It's township is a chapelry and comprises a scattered village, 1817 inhabitants and 1560 acres of land, including parts of Kilnhurst and the hamlet of Birdwell Flatts. The Church, St. Margaret’s. (Find a grave St. Margaret’s churchyard.)

(SGMT – Burngreave Cemetary). (SGMT – Burngreave Cemetary)  The cemetery is situated in what was then Brightside Bierlow, one of the townships which made up Sheffield. (Friends of Burngreave Cemetery – Home)

In 1864 na die veroordeling van 'n paar myners vir hul behandeling van 'n mede-werker, het die landdroshof gesê:  “Kilnhurst was situated in a very out of the way district and was a place where the people were addicted to barborous, ignorent and savage customs”.  http://www.kilnhurstheritage.co.uk/kilnhurst-2/kilnhurst/

(Lambert, Tim:  A brief history of Yorkshire. http://www.localhistories.org/yorkshire.html)

Civil parish: Swinton, Village or hamlet: Kilnhurst, District of Swinton. The importance of the shaft to colliery workers was acknowledged by their use of the word ‘pit’ as synonymous with colliery.  (Mason, Peter Ford:  The Pit Sinkers of Northumberland and Durham.)
