John Dixon Wortley (https://joemasonspage.wordpress.com/2017/03/19/the-revd-john-dixon-wortley-1879-1950/)

THE REVD JOHN DIXON WORTLEY (1879-1950)
By joemasonspage on March 19, 2017

The eldest son of John and Sarah Wortley was John Dixon Wortley (the name Dixon after his maternal grandmother’s maiden name), born in 1870 at Swafield, which is the village that lies between Trunch and North Walsham. John Dixon Wortley went up to Trinity College (Cambridge) to read Divinity in 1889. By then the family were living in Frettenham, an area between Spixworth and Coltishall and only 6 miles from Norwich. It is well-known for its rich soil and superior farmland. After various curacies, first in Liverpool and then in Kent and Surrey, John Dixon Wortley was given the living of Swannington by his old college Trinity Hall. He was inducted in 1917 and remained at Swannington until his death at the age of 79 in 1950. His predecessor, the Revd George B. Aitkinson, had taught Wortley as a Fellow of “The Hall”, while Wortley was an undergraduate there in 1890. John Dixon Wortley was the last Rector to live in Swannington Rectory, built in the 17th century.

The Rectory, Swannington, Norfolk (https://joemasonspage.wordpress.com/2017/03/19/the-revd-john-dixon-wortley-1879-1950/)

John Dixon Wortley was a prolific author on local history subjects during the first half of the 20th century. The following bibliography makes no claims of completeness. The duties associated with the care of the souls of Swannington obviously did not occupy him all his time.

Swannigton: its church, Rectors and History; 1921
An Account of the Parish Church of Skeyton 1923
Downham Market; its Church and History; 1924
The Parishes and Churches of Attlebridge and Morton-on-the-Hill; 1925
Alderford Church; 1928
Antiquarian Treasures discovered at Swannington, Norfolk; 1930
The Charm and Beauty of our Commons and Heaths; 1931
The Story of Swannington Parish Church from prehistoric times; 1932
Slyvan Scenery: the Charm and Beauty of our Trees and Woodlands; 1932
Miscellaneous Poems; no date.  Joseph Mason  (https://joemasonspage.wordpress.com/2017/03/19/the-revd-john-dixon-wortley-1879-1950/)

HENGRAVE is a parish near the river Lark, 2 ½ miles north-east from Saxham station on the Bury and Newmarket section of the Great Eastern railway and 4 north-west from Bury St. Edmunds, in the North Western division of the county, Thingoe and Thedwastre petty sessional division, Thingoe hundred and union, Bury St. Edmunds county court district, rural deanery of Thingoe, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church stands near the Hall, and had been disused as a parish church since the middle of the 16th century, but was reopened Jan. 1900, having in 1888—9 undergone thorough restoration at the cost of John Wood esq. from the designs of Mr. H. Green, of Norwich, diocesan architect; it is an edifice of stone, chiefly of the Norman period, consisting of chancel, cave, south porch and a round western tower: in the Hengrave chapel is an altar tomb of marble and colored freestone with a canopy supported on six pillars, and a recumbent effigy to Sir Thomas Kytson, ob. 1540, and Margaret (Donington), his relict, previously widow of Sir Richard Long, of Shengay, Cambs. and eventually third wife of John (Bourchier), second Earl of Bath; she died in London, 20 Dec. 1561, and was buried here 12 Jan. 1561. There are some other monuments. The register dates from the year 1561. The living is a rectory, consolidated with Flempton, joint net yearly value, £300, with 40 acres of glebe, in the gift of John Wood esq. and held since 1896 by the Rev. Robert Woods Wortley B.A. of Caius College, Cambridge, who resides at Flempton. The Almshouses, consisting of four tenements, were erected and endowed by Sir Thomas Kytson with £30 yearly, and subsequently endowed by Elizabeth, his widow, with £4 a year, to provide twelve gowns for twelve of the poorest old women in the twelve surrounding parishes, besides several smaller provisions. Hengrave Hall, the property and residence of John Wood esq. MA., D.L., J.P. lord of the manor and sole landowner, is a Tudor mansion, erected in 1525 by Sir Thomas Kytson, and standing in a park of 300 acres. The soil is good mixed; subsoil, chalk, gravel and clay. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 887 acres of land and 10 of water; rateable value, about £743; the population in 1891 was 189. The nearest telegraph office is at Culford, about 1 ½ miles distant. Bury St. Edmunds is the nearest money order office. The children of this parish attend the school at Flempton. (https://forebears.io/england/suffolk/hengrave)

The Village of Waddingham lies east of Ermine Street and west of the New river Ancholme. Historically the village has developed from two settlements, Stainton and Waddingham, which were situated on opposite banks of the stream, each with their own church. The village retains two large village greens and has a small stream which winds its way to the river. The village must not be confused with the village of Waddington which is south of Lincoln. The Parish church of St Mary and St Peter, Waddingham is situated on the site of the earlier St Mary’s Church; the second Church is no more. Doubt remains as to its exact location which might be at the top of the high street. The Church was restored circa 1860 and most of the exterior dates to that time. In the interior of the church there is some evidence of the original church in the North Aisle.  Numbers used on this document relate to stones NOT burial plots, which accounts for all the gaps on the attached plan They run consecutively beginning in the near right hand corner of the ground ending the front part at the lych gate then recommencing at the Cenotaph. Many of the stones are deteriorating; where the stone has now become unreadable the inscriptions include details from previous recordings. Henry Wright, Esq en NN xx Victoria BARBER, geb. 1837, Bradwell, Norfolk, Engeland, oorl. 1914, d.v. the squire of Hobland Hall in Bradwell near Lowestoft

John was die seun van John Wortley en Matilda Eliza Weggett.

John was born in North Walsham in 1835. He belonged to a wealthy farming family; by the age of 25 John Wortley was already established with a dairy herd and a farm of 218 acres. In 1867 he married a young lady called Sarah Wright who was born in Trunch in 1845. Her father was a corn merchant and another wealthy landowner. Sarah died aged only thirty, about eighteen months after her second son Earnest Dixon was born in 1874. Her widower John soon remarried; his second wife Victoria Barber was born in 1837 to the squire of Hobland Hall in Bradwell near Lowestoft. The family later moved to Skeyton, which is another village not far from North Walsham. Their stepmother Victoria had two daughters. Their father John Wortley died in 1910 and his wife four years later. (Joseph Mason)(https://joemasonspage.wordpress.com/2017/03/19/the-revd-john-dixon-wortley-1879-1950/)
