A farmer at Glen Lynden near Bedford in the Eastern Cape. A legendary horse whisperer, he was also known to be merciless toward ill disciplined labourers, so much so that he once appeared before the Magistrate on charges of assault and received a heavy fine. Upon leaving the court, which was usually held in the shade of a large tree, the complainant provoked him after which he subsequently beat him up again. He was unceremoniously dragged back to face the court during which he produced a roll of bank notes from his jacket pocket and informed the Magistrate that he would pay the fine in advance to sort the Magistrate out! In 1897 he sold up and trekked to Rhodesia as the storm clouds of the Anglo-Boer war loomed over the horizons. In 1907 he bought the farm Totnes in the Wedza district.  (https://www.geni.com/people/Petrus-Johannes-Nel-Snr/6000000018490853095)
