His sons all served with the Piet Retief commando. Philip Jacobus Nel and Jacob Louis Poklenberg Nel surrendered together with him. Stephanus Christiaan Nel and Willem Martinus Johannes Nel surrendered 1 March 1901. The family lived together at Volksrust until his sons joined the National Scouts. (Anita Campbell)
