Ben trou in 1863 met Mary Senior in die dist. Huddersfield.
Die Senior
familie was 'n belangrike familie in Shepley as gevolg van hulle betrokkenheid by die brou-industrie,
Cliffe House en ook omdat hulle groot plaaslike werkgewers was. (Billington,
David: Shepley, Believe it …… or
Not!) A man called Seth Senior invested
a sovereign to start brewing his own fine ales using Shepley water. He worked
from his cottage, now The Sovereign Inn, and called his brew ‘Sovereign Ales’.
It became so popular that a thousand barrels a week were transported by horse
and cart to Shepley station and surrounding outlets. When he made his money he
built Highfield Brewery and Cliffe House.
(Billington, David: Shepley,
Believe it …… or Not!) The Sovereign Inn
is one of the most famous hostelries in the district and numerous traditions
have grown up around it. The name of the
establishment is the subject of a romantic narrative, which claims that around
1829, its founder, Seth Senior, was an itinerant tinsmith, who called at Lane
Head House one cold winter’s night, explaining that his wife had gone into
labour in an adjacent field and begging for assistance. The Firth family, who owned Lane Head House
at the time, not only came to the Seniors’ aid, they took the family in over
the winter months, employing them as servants and accommodation them over the
coach house. When spring came, Mr Firth
presented Seth with a gold sovereign for his labours. The tinsmith used this to rent a nearby
cottage, where he began to brew beer from local spring water. This was the birth of the Sovereign Inn, an
enterprise that flourished until the Senior family owned several pubs and
breweries in the Shepley area. (Roberts,
