Volgens die Bradfield workhouse records van 6 November 1831 kom dit voor asof die familie van Rowley Regis af weg is. Joseph was werkloos. Op die 7de neem Joseph vir Mary, Rebecca en William daar uit. Mary kom op 5 Desember terug om die ander twee meisies Ann en Caroline te kom haal.

1831. Nov 6. Mary Wortley removed from Rowley Regis Stafford (age 45) her husband out of employ; Ann their daughter (age14); Caroline daughter (age 11); Rebecca daughter (age 8); William their son (age 7). 7 Nov. Husband takes wife and Rebecca and William to fetch the other two in a fortnight. 5th Dec. Mary Wortley taken the other two children.

The Overseers of the Poor had a responsibility for ensuring orphans and other children living in Workhouses learnt a trade, so details of apprenticeships arranged by them. (http://history.foote-family.com/butchers/sources.php) Terwyl die familie in die workhouse was, was daar rekords van die dogters, wat aan skoene gewerk het. Dit is moontlik dat Caroline 'n werk by 'n skoenmaker gekry het. Dit was nie ongewoon 'n 12 jarige om uitgestuur te word om te gaan werk nie.
1832. 30 Nov. Mary, wife of Joseph Wortley, Hill Foot, with daughter Sarah Bohnen a widow – husband runaway – moved from Rowley, Staffordshire a year ago here. 3 children at home. Ann 16, Rebecca 8, William 7. Husband worked for Henry Ward, Philadelphia.
