'Farmer George.

Grondbesit was steeds die hoofbron van welvaard. Teen
1750 was daar twee belangrike beroepe in Shepley. Boerdery en die vervaardiging van sale yarn. This was wool spun for warps and
was taken on pack horses to Dewsbury Market. Those going to market were
summoned by the sound of a horn from The Bridge area, very early in the
morning, They travelled together as the journey to Dewsbury was dangerous. This
business led to entrepreneurs becoming hawkers (travelling
salesmen) of higher quality and more expensive stocking yarns. As
they became more prosperous they extended their dealings to cloth and more
general drapery. Their successful enterprise encouraged others to follow. The
results were a rapid increase in population and great progress in manufacturing
in the village and led to the foundation of the famous Shepley
tailors or ‘higglers’. (Billington,

seun, Edward Hardy, Esq, gegaan. (Morehouse, Henry James: The history
and topography of the parish of Kirkburton and of the graveship of Holme,
Holmfirth in the county of York. Huddersfield MDCCLXI)
Verbeterde
graanoeste ingesluit.
(Billington, David: Shepley,

Horses were used for
ploughing and farmers were keen
to show their skills in keenly contested ploughing matches. (Billington, David: Shepley, Believe it
…… or Not!)
Min plekke is
(Billington, David: Shepley, Believe it
