Joseph Edward was die seun van John Wortley en Ann Greenwood.

Born in England and came with his parents to America when he was 3 years old, traveling on a sailing vessel that was six weeks en route to their destination. The family settled in Michigan near Jackson. When he was a young man, he bought a farm in Campbell township and later had a farm in Carlton township.  In 1880 he married Elizabeth Lepard and to this union nine children were born: William J, Walter E, Ruth (Mrs. Ernest Cunningham), Etta Mae(Mrs. Charles Darby), Howard C, Mary J (Mrs. Carlton Campbell), Gladys Pearl, Glendora (Mrs. Cleo Sears) and Lelia (Mrs. L. Lundberg).  The family moved to Lake Odessa in 1919. They were members of the Congregational Church.  Mr. Wortley was one of the grand old men of Lake Odessa, always having a smile for all he met and always grateful for the many kindnesses of his children and grandchildren.  (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/75769503/joseph-e-wortley)
