"We sincerely regret to record the death of Mr Thomas Wortley, innkeeper, of 73. Claypath, which occurred very suddenly on Tuesday evening last. Mr Wortley had on that day partaken of a very hearty dinner, after which he retired for a little rest. The whole of the time he was in his room, however, he felt unwell, and on going downstairs for tea complained to his daughter, who sent for his medical attendant. The latter directed Mr Wortley back to his room, which he never left again, a stroke supervening and causing death about 11 o'clock the same evening. Deceased was a Durham born citizen, and served his apprenticeship as a joiner with the late Alderman Robert Robson. For many years he worked with the late Mr Appleby as a journeyman joiner at Messrs Hendersons' Carpet Manufactory, retiring when he had firmly established the business at 73, Claypath, his predecessor in which was the late Mrs Weelands. Mr Wortley was formerly a staunch Liberal, but the Church spoiliation schemes of the Radical Governments caused him to waver, and when at the bidding of the extreme class of politicians the Gladstone Government accepted a policy of confiscation all round. Mr Wortley, like many others, entirely forsook that party and became an active and energetic worker on the Unionist side. Deceased, as we have stated, was a representative of a very old Durham family, was widely known, and held in the highest esteem. The interment will take place this (Friday) afternoon."
