Charles, M.D., 87, of Charlotte, formerly of Okemos, MI, died peacefully on Wednesday, May 31, 2017. Chuck was the son of Alfred and Helen (Showerman) Wortley. 

As child, Chuck enjoyed summer trips to Watervale in Arcadia, where he met his lifelong love, Natalie Northcott. The two later married on June 14, 1952 and were married for 56 years. 

Chuck graduated from Highland Park High School before attending the University of Michigan and later Wayne College of Medicine, earning his medical degree in 1955. He interned at High Park General Hospital before enlisting in the U.S. Army from 1956-1958, where he served as a General Medical Officer in Japan. 

Upon his return, he completed his residency in Pediatrics at the University of Michigan, earning his certification in 1962. He then went on to his own solo practice in Lansing through 1991. During this time, he started the first specialty clinic for Cystic Fibrosis and co-founded the Michigan Pulmonary Camp with Rev. Paul Schneiber. 

He taught as Association Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine as well as Department Chief of Pediatrics and Assistant Medical Director for Residencies at Ingham Medical Center. Chuck served as attending physician to the Ingham County Health Department, attending staff at E.W. Sparrow Hospital and Ingham Medical Center, and traveled to Charlotte as consulting staff to Hayes Green Memorial Hospital. 

He remained a dedicated member of many medical societies. Following his retirement in 1991, he and Natalie moved north to Benzonia, MI, where he served as an active member of the Kiwanis Club and enjoyed tending his yard, reading, and time spent with family. 

Chuck was predeceased by his dear wife, Natalie, on October 23, 2008. 

He is survived by his son, Gregory Charles (Melissa) Wortley of Charlotte; daughter, Wendy Lee Wortley of Baltimore, MD; 4 grandchildren, Angela, Dustin, Jerry and Jamar; 2 great-grandchildren, Jace and Austin; cousins, Isabel and Robert Smith and their children, and William Smith and his children. 

A Memorial Service was held on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at Pray Funeral Home with Rev. Steven Ezop officiating.
