Marie Louise Lucienne Juliette Stuart-Wortley (nee Martin) Late Edwardes, was born in Montreal on the 28th May 1878, the daughter of Francois Xavier Martin. She was brought up in Vancouver where she made several appearances as an amateur opera singer.
She moved to France where she studied with Jean de Reszke. Her debut as a professional singer was on the 15th July 1908 in Covent Garden. Her stage name was Madame Edvina. She sang her in many roles. She travelled back to Canada where she sang with the Montreal Opera in 1912. Then with the Boston Opera Company she travelled to Paris in 1914. Her travels were curtailed by the outbreak of WW1, during which she gave her services at many benefit concerts and undertook her only concert tour of Canada in 1916. Her voice was described as ‘limpid and even and with its pure sensuous quality held great charm, even though produced in the ''open'' French manner. ''Very modern'' as an actress, she sang too well for the ancients to flout her on that score.' Post-war she sang at Covent Garden.
She was married three times. The first in 1898 to James Mathews Buxton – it is not known what happened to this spouse. Secondly on 3 September 1901 to the Honourable Cecil Edwardes), son of William Edwardes, 4th Baron Kensington and Grace Elizabeth Johnstone-Douglas, who died on active service in 1917 in France. She had two daughters’ Lumena and Marie Edwardes. Thirdly on 12 November 1919 to Major Nicholas Rothesay Stuart-Wortley, who pre-deceased her in 1926, after which she moved to Cannes, where she ran an antique shop until she left France at the outbreak of WW2.
